Public Meetings & Public Notices-How does it all work
Regular meetings of the Kalama City Council are held on the First and Third Wednesdays of each month. Kalama Planning Commission meetings are on the Second Thursday of each month. These are regular meetings set by the City’s code and therefore do not require publication. Special meetings are held on an individual issue and only the issue can be discussed at that meeting. Special meetings require a 24 notice be sent to all Council members and the newspaper of record. Should a meeting be canceled due to lack of a quorum, then that is posted at the time of the meeting cancellation.

WATER/SEWER RATE INCREASES
In 2015 the City of Kalama conducted a comprehensive water/sewer rate study and based upon the findings and recommendations included in the final report, has adopted a schedule of rate increases to be implemented over the next five years. Beginning with the bill citizens will receive at the beginning of February for January usage, water rates will be increased 4% and sewer rates will increase 9.5%. Based on an average usage of 600 cubic feet, the increase will be approximately $7.58 per month. With an average monthly usage of 1000 cubic feet, the increase will be approximately $8.00 per month. Garbage rates also had an increase of .07 on a 32 gallon cart and .35 on a 60 gallon cart. Citizens will see water/sewer rate increases in January of each of the following years of 2% each year for water and 9.5% for 2017 & 2018, 8.5% in 2019 and 2% in 2020 for sewer. City's Water/Sewer Rate Study- Final Report
11/05/2015 8:11 AM
WATER & SEWER RATES - HEARING OCTOBER 21, 2015
The City contracted with engineering firm HPR, Inc to complete a Water/Sewer Rate Study. The results will be presented at a PUBLIC HEARING on OCTOBER 21, 2015 at 7pm, City Council Chambers. Please attend this important meeting. The purpose of the rate study is to determine what the rates need to be and ensure rates are equitable to customers. The City has struggled in recent years with the need to increase rates to meet the needs for operations, system improvements and the current debt obligations, while understanding citizen concerns with rising costs. The rates paid for water/sewer services cover the expenses of operating the system, including the day to day operations, costs for maintaining the system through repairs when something fails, and upgrading the system to avoid failures. By law none of the revenue received from water/sewer rates can be allocated to other functions of the city such as police, streets, or library, but only spent on water/sewer related activities.
